Living in Cyprus
Weather, life, politics, shopping, driving, travel, in Cyprus. Further visits 1978 and 1979 for a month at a time ( changes were evident) In 1985 whist working in Kuwait I came for 2 weeks and ended up buying an apartmentI then came on a regular basis every year for a 3 week break until I decided to sell up in UK and moved here in Jan 2008. Over the years I have seen a lot of changes to the island some for the good and a lot for the detriment of the island.
Some can unfortunately not be reversed however, there are lots of ways Cyprus can become the island it once was! There are many factors to consider if you think ts a great place to live ( be it Cyprus or any other destination) Accomodation: buy or rent?
Transport and logistics Health cover Employment prospects Cost of living Crime rate and social activity Politics Weather Range and availability of products The culture The population As time goes on we will expand on issues that are concerns you need to consider What's your question or concerns?
Many people fall in love with this island during a short holiday here.
Living ANYWHERE in the world is a whole new "ball game" from a holiday break.
I first arrived on the island on 21 October 1971 and spent a couple of years here living in accomodation with the Cypriot community in Larnaca.

Re: Living in Cyprus
Cyprus - Public transport is not very well documented, timetables are hit and miss (if they exist at all) So a bus lane to free congestion?
Where will this occur already streets in Larnaca are too narrow and a bus lane will be abused. Lapsed time cameras* would be a great asset to stop speeding road users. Artemidos Ave in Larnaca is a regular late night practice run for would be F1 and motor cyclists. * No need for Police to use hand held cameras, set up irregular checks the systems operate 24/7 and NO exceptions as tickets are automatically generated as in UK.
Recycling - This seems to be non existent little to no recycling is encouraged in Larnaca we have Katiklismos at present the street litter bins are overflowing with all kinds of rubbish there are no recycle bins on the beach or in supermarkets Years ago the breweries charged bottle deposits so that the glass could be reused - why was it stopped?
Fly tipping seems to be a Cypriot profession all over the island it occurs and no regard for the environment nor the preservation of the local beauty spots. Rubbish is dumped wherever people like ( as long as its not in their back yard, although in some cases it is)
Cyprus needs to wake up to being European and not Middle Eastern in its thinking. There are many people who are leaving here because of the way Cyprus is going and become( downhill rather than progressing forward)
its sad a lot of good things are being lost forever in Cyprus and even the locals recognise that. Time the local politicians and government got their act together and organised a clean up in many aspects lets make Cyprus the Jewel in The Mediterranean!!!
