Description:

Located on the southwest coast of Cyprus and home to the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, Paphos (Pafos) is a popular resort for tourists and expatriates. It features a beautiful working fishing harbour supplying the local tavernas, picturesque coastlines and ancient archaeological sites and other historical artifacts.

It was once the capital of Cyprus in ancient Roman times. With historical Roman remains and fine mosaics, the town of Paphos is now a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.

Paphos has been inhabited since the Neolithic period according to archaeologists.

Paphos has always been a popular location for the british expatriate community particulary with its close proximity to Paphos Airport. However in recent years, there has been an increase in property development both for holiday homes and permanent residence.

The port of Paphos serves as a small marina with a capacity of around 300 boats. However, a new marina serving up to 1000 boats is planned at Kissonerga, next to Coral Bay.

Climate:
Typically Mediterranean where humidity measurements can increase to 85% in July and August and the temperature can reach over 35 degrees. The winters are very mild with little rainfall which attracts many tourists to Paphos during this time.

To Visit:
Paphos Roman Mosaics at Paphos Archaeological Park - following extensive excavations, three Roman villas have been discovered, restored and open to the public. The mosaics can be seen in all their splendour in the House of Dionysus, the House of Aion, and the House of Theseus.

Tombs of the Kings - dating back to 300BC when the Ancient Greeks ruled Cyprus. The underground tombs are carved from solid rock and are thought to be the burial sites of aristocrats and government officials as opposed to Kings like the name would suggest. The more elaborate have steps down to roomed tombs and underground columns.

Paphos Castle - Built by the Byzantines to protect Paphos harbour. It has served many uses in its time but is now used for the annual open air Paphos cultural festival held in September.

Events:
March - Paphos Marathon

May - Anthestiria (anthos meaning flower) Flower Festival - Celebration of spring featuring a parade of decorative flower floats travelling down Poseidon Avenue.

September - Paphos Aphrodite Festival - Held at the Medieval Castle Square, the celebrations include traditional Greek and Cypriot dancing, singing and music events.
