Description:
Dedicated to ‘Our Lady of the Forests', the Ayia Napa monastery is located in the centre of Ayia Napa.
The monastery takes its name from the village of Ayia Napa which translates to ‘wooded valley'.
Built around 1500 AD, the monastery is cut into the rock and has an area underground. It is surrounded by high stone walls.
The monastery, resembling a medieval castle, was restored in 1950. In 1978 it became an Ecumenical Conference Centre for the Middle East.
A new church was built in south west of the monastery in 1994 which has been dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
The Ottoman bear's head fountain spouts water from an ancient viaduct which was engineered by the Romans.
The Ayia Napa monastery can be visited during the following times:-
Summer: 09:30 - 21:00
Winter: 09:30 - 15:00
