Description:
Located at the west end of the Paphos harbour, Paphos Castle (also known as Paphos Fort) was built during the Frankish occupation in the 13th century and has the UNESCO World Heritage accreditation.
The castle has only one entrance on its east side and very small windows. The main area is a big square tower that has an enclosed courtyard in the middle.
The Venetians dismantled the castle in 1570 so that the Ottomans who had invaded the island could not use it.
According to a Turkish inscription placed above the entrance the Ottomans rebuilt the castle in 1780 after capturing the island.
Paphos Castle has served as a prison, a fortress, a warehouse for storiing salt and is now a backdrop to the annual open air Paphos cultural festival which takes place in September.
You can visit the castle and experience the atmospheric interior whilst climbing to the top to enjoy the breathtaking view of the harbour and shoreline.
