Kolossi Castle - Cyprus

Category: Places of Interest

Description:

Kolossi Castle is located a few kilometres from the city of Limassol. The castle is made up of large stone rooms and floors with twisty, twiny staircases.

During the middle ages, Kolossi Castle was used as to produce sugar which was one of the main exports in Cyprus at that time.

It is thought that the original castle was built around 1210 by Frankish military when Kolossi was given by King Hugh I to the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem (Knights Hospitallers) where it served as the Grand Command.

The present castle was built in 1454 by the Knights Hospitallers and excavations are still being carried out at the site.

Richard the Lion Heart, the Knights Templar and the Knights Hospitallers have all stayed at the castle during its existence.
