A Guide 2 Diving in Cyprus

Category: Resources

Description:

Cyprus is the ideal location for those wishing to try Scuba Diving. With the excellent summer weather and mild winters, Cyprus has one of the longest dive holiday climates.

The Mediterranean waters around Cyprus are warm and clear with even tides and visibility reaching 30 - 40 metres.

Cyprus has over 50 different dive sites in its waters and several interesting underwater caves and reefs to explore with an abundance of marine life.

The wreck of Zenobia about 1 kilometre off the Larnaca coast is very popular with divers worldwide. The Zenobia was a Swedish truck ferry that sunk on its maiden voyage fully laden with 107 cargo trucks. The Zenobia with its cargo lies at a depth of 42 metres and can be explored by experienced divers. It is classed as one of the 'top 10 ship wrecks' around the world because of the accessibility and amazing marine life surrounding it. Mini submarines take tourists to see the wreck.

For beginners, the Lebanese freighter, Vera K, lies in 8 metres of water in Paphos making it an ideal site.

Diving in Cyprus can be traced back over three generations ago when marine sea sponges were collected from the rock on the seabed by young men who would then sell the sea sponges ashore.

Types of Diving Courses:

Shore Diver Course - introduction diving at a depth of 12 metres accompanied by a qualified diver.

Open Water Qualification - diving to a depth of 18 metres. The course includes 5 theory modules, 5 swimming pool diving sessions and 4 open water sessions.

Childrens courses are also available.

If you have never dived before, in safe conditions with professional supervision, you can learn the basics of breathing underwater; visit the underwater remains of ancient archaeological ruins and explore rock gardens encapsulated in sponge.

Divers from the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Russia and throughout Europe visit Cyprus, where there are Dive Centres to cater for the complete beginner to experienced divers.

Trips, lessons, guides and equipment for scuba or snorkelling are available at dive centres across the island. It is recommended to use a PADI dive centre.
