Description:
Lying approximately 2 kilometres north-west of Paphos harbour in Cyprus is the Tombs of the Kings, a large burial place spread out along the coast road overlooking the sea.
Some of the underground tombs date back to the 4th Century BC and are carved from solid rock.
The name suggests that Kings were buried here but further studies have found that the burial sites were for Paphian dignitaries and Cyprus aristocrats.
The tombs were built to resemble the life and position of the living person and thus had jewels, money, furniture and other belongings on the walls inside.
Each tomb was built to hold the family and had to be opened and reopened each time a family member died.
To this day archaeological excavations are still being carried out at the site.
