Kourion Theatre in Limassol - Cyprus

Category: Places of Interest

Description:

On the outskirts of Limassol in Cyprus stands the ancient Kourion theatre.

The theatre was originally built around the late 2nd Century A.D. in the Hellenistic period. It was then renovated around 64/65 A.D. under the rule of the emperor Nero.

In the 3rd Century, the first three rows of seats were removed and the theatre was converted to an arena to stage gladiator contests.

However, later on that century, the theatre was restored back to musical and theatrical performances as tastes for culture returned.

The theatre is now used for open air musical and theatrical performances during the summer months.
