Paphos Ancient Odeon in Cyprus

Category: Places of Interest

Description:

A must see in Paphos is the Paphos Ancient Odeon which is located in the northeast of the city in Cyprus.

The Paphos Odeon was built in the 2nd Century and is made out entirely of limestone blocks. It appears that the theatre continued to be used until the 5th Century.

The columns and foundations of the remains of the ancient marketplace 'Roman Agora' can be found close to the Odeon.

There is a modern lighthouse next to the Odeon and a rocky structure type mound that is thought to have been the towns Acropolis.

The Cyprus Department of Antiquities uncovered the Paphos Odeon during 1973 and 1974. The theatre containing 12 rows of seats has been partly restored making it easier to envisage how it would have been when used in the Roman times.

Apart from the Odeon being an interesting tourist attraction, it is also a venue for open air performances during the summer months.

The Paphos Odeon is well worth a visit and an ideal opportunity to compare sightseeing with some great entertainment in Cyprus.
