Description:
Kakopetria sits on the lower slopes of the Troodos Mountains, approximately 670 metres above sea level. It stands as the highest village within the Solea Valley and is 55 kilometres southwest of Nicosia.
The village is built on the banks of the Kargotis River and Garillis River where the rivers both join to make the River Klarios finally flowing into Morphou Bay in Pentagia.
Kakopetria is surrounded by green, thick, forestland and is a cool haven for tourists and locals alike escaping the hot summer Cyprus months.
The name kako, meaning bad, and petra meaning stone is said to come from the large stones that were washed downstream making movement within the village difficult. However, later on these 'bad stones' were put to good use as the foundations for the houses in the village.
The name may have also been derived from the place where newlyweds traditionally sat on the large rock 'Petra tou Androgynou' - Couples Rock - but one day the rock toppled over and crushed the newlyweds and was then known as 'kakopetra' - Bad Rock.
Today, Kakopetria has all the local ammenities of a bustling village without spoiling its traditional look. Banks, hotels, inns, school, post office, restaurants, tavernas, bars, pharmicies, hairdressers, butchers and supermarkets are just some of what can be found in the village.
Climate:
The annual average rainfall of Kakopetria is about 648 mm making it ideal for the cultivation of fruit bearing trees, vineyards, vegetables and cereals.
