Hints and Tips on Beaches and Swimming in Cyprus

It is a fun time to go to the beach and have a swim in the sea, but like most places, there are some simple rules to ensure that safety is top of the list.

 
To help you enjoy your trip to the beach in Cyprus, some simple rules are listed below.

 
AT THE BEACH
 

• No obstructions are to be placed less than 3 metres from the water as this is a lifesaving access area.
• Vehicles are not allowed on the beach.
• Dogs are not allowed on the beach unless it is a designated 'Dog Beach' which is well sign posted.
• Littering is not allowed on the beach.
• Avoid sunbathing in secluded coves where there are no lifeguards.
• Have respect for other bathers on the beach.

 
IN THE SEA
 

• Never swim in the sea when there is a red flag flying, swim with caution if the yellow flag is flying.
• Avoid drinking alcohol and eating heavily before swimming in the sea.
• Obtain local advice on sea conditions.
• Boats are strictly prohibited in buoy marked corridors with speeds higher than 3 knots.
• Avoid swimming in boat corridors marked with small orange buoys that run vertical to the coastline.
• Keep clear of boats when swimming.
• Avoid strong sea currents, if caught up in a current, swim diagonally away from it towards the beach.
• If snorkelling, use fluorescent tape for better visibility on the top of the snorkel.
• If swimming, snorkelling or diving outside the safety of the designated swimming areas, an obvious floating device must be used to make boats in the area aware of your presence.
• It is prohibited to remove any antiquities from the sea.

 
Always try to be aware of flags and signs on the beach and what they mean with regards to sea conditions. The lifeguards are there to help and explain.
