Famous for its carob and olive productions, Maroni is a small village about 35 km south west of Larnaca in Cyprus and is ideally located close to the main highway connecting Limassol and Nicosia. It is 2 km from the sea making it a very popular location for both tourists and locals.
The main industries in Maroni are agriculture and tourism. The climate makes it perfect for growing citrus fruits, cereals, locust and olive trees and many other vegetables.
Maroni is also involved in the Basilico-Pentaschino irrigation project and the land has benefited greatly from the project.
Although there has been an increase in property development in the area, Maroni has strict rules on building new properties. Older properties have been bought and renovated keeping the original traditional architecture in place. The location and accessibility of Maroni makes it very popular for propery buyers.
With its quaint, cobbled streets, small shops, and tavernas, it still holds the beauty and charm of a traditional Cypriot village.
As with many villages in Cyprus, it has a history of archaeological ruins and interesting churches dating back to the Byzantine period. Maroni has existed since Medieval times and the name 'Marova' can be found on old maps.
There are different interpretations of how the village got its name. However, according to the Encyclopedia of Cyprus, it was named after Saint Maronas who also gave his name to the Maronas village in Paphos.

Maroni receives and average rainfall of about 380 mm each year.
To Visit:
The Church of St. George (Agios Georgios) - built in 1878 in commemoration of St. George who rescued the village from a cholera epidemic.
Events:
23rd April - St. George's day is celebrated in the village.
18th July - St Maronas Day is celebrated at the church.
