Winter in Cyprus

Category: Resources

Description:

The Cyprus winter starts around the beginning of December when the occasional rain falls on coastland areas.

There is still an average of six hours of sunshine a day and temperatures average 16 degrees centigrade dropping to around 7 degrees during the night.

In the tourist areas, some bars and restaurants in Cyprus take time out with their families and close for a couple of months. This can be seen more on the east coast of Cyprus where Ayia Napa and Protaras resemble ghost towns. Only a few bars, restaurants and hotels stay open during the winter in these particular tourist resorts.

Winter is ideal to get the walking boots on and take advantage of the beautiful, scenic walking routes scattered around many areas of Cyprus.

Some municipalities offer cultural performances during the winter months. The coastal resort of Ayia Napa has a 'Cultural Winter' program with traditional dancing, music concerts and other cultural events which are very popular during winter.

During the colder months of January and February, Troodos normally has snow on the mountain caps and it is an opportunity to do some skiing up there. However, snow chains may be necessary for vehicles, so be warned!

Warm clothing is donned later on in the day after the warm afternoons as the colder evenings draw in.
