Description:
Lefkara is best known for its hand made lacework, embroidery and silver handicrafts. Lefkara is made up of Upper and Lower Lefkara which are separate villages situated on the western mountain range of the Larnaca region.
Around the stone paved village paths, there are plenty of small shops selling the traditional lace of Lefkara. The views from the village are panoramic and on a clear day, the Larnaca coastline can be seen.
Women can often be seen along the road working on their fine embroideries.
There is a Folklore Museum in an old house in the town showing visitors what life was like in a typical Cypriot house over a century ago. It also exhibits furniture from wealthy families, traditional local costumes and Lefkara lacework.
It has been said that Leonardo Da Vinci once visited the village and took embroidery back to the Cathedral in Milan.
During World War II, the sale of lace stopped and never recovered. This caused many people to leave Lefkara and by the 1930's half of the village was uninhabited.
There have been property restorations in Lefkara to bring some of the older buildings back to the beauty they once were. Because of the Lefkara heritage, there appears to be limited new property and developments in the village.
To Visit:
