Description:
Cyprus has mains connected electricity and water in all towns. Calor Gas is provided in small and large bottles. The small bottles can be purchased at most supermarkets, petrol stations and other stores. The larger bottles can also be purchased on a delivery basis.
Electricity is supplied by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC). Billing is on a 2 monthly basis. For fault reporting dial 1800.
Appliances sold in shops in Cyprus are required to be fitted with the standard 3 pin plug or have an adaptor.
Most homes are fitted with solar panels on the roof which heat the water. On a sunny day from about May to October, there is no need to use electricity to heat the water.
The electricity cables are overhead which means that installation is cheaper but storm damage can occur.
Each munincipality has its own water board that provides water to all homes. Billing is on a quarterly basis. During the summer months, the municipality may limit water to households to preserve its supplies.
Hot and cold water tanks are normally located on the roof. Kitchens generally have hot and cold water taps that use water from the tanks, plus a mains water tap that gets cold water direct from the mains for drinking purposes.
The drainage system is slowly coming into line with EU regulations, but many homes still have a septic tank rather than being connected to the mains for waste water.
The telephony system is provided by the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority CYTA. Both land line and mobile tariffs at competative prices are available. For Call Centre dial 132. There are other telephone providers in Cyprus competing for business.
Mobile phones can either be on a contract basis or pay-as-you-go. Top up cards can be purchased in many kiosks and other outlets. Billing is on a monthly basis.
All utility bills can either be paid at the local utility office or by direct debit through your bank.
