Schools in Cyprus follows a similar curriculum to Britain, as Cyprus was under British rule until 1960.
The Cyprus Education system is split into four stages: Pre-primary, primary, secondary and higher.
Children are required to attend compulsory schooling for 9 years between the ages of 6 to 15 years.
Pre-Primary Education
The Ministry of Education and Culture in Cyprus determines the curriculum to be followed in the three types of pre-primary schools:
- Public nursery schools - all teachers must be qualified, whilst teachers' aids must have completed secondary school.
- Communal nursery schools - run by parents' associations or community authorities.
- Private nursery schools - privately owned and run according to the Private Schools Law, 1971 of the Republic of Cyprus.
Primary Education
Primary school education is compulsory in Cyprus. The government provide state run schools which are free. Private schooling fees vary from school to school.
Children enter primary school education from the age of 5 years and 8 months.
When primary school education is complete, a leaving certificate is issued.
Children are continually assessed as there are no completion exams in order to proceed to Secondary education. Children cannot proceed to Secondary school without a leaving certificate.
Secondary Education
There are no entrance exams for children moving from state primary schools however children from private primary schooling or foreign-language institutes must undergo a series of entrance exams.
- Secondary education is compulsory for the first 3 years until the age of 15 years.
- The school day is from 07:30 to 13:35.
- The school year begins in September and ends in June.
Higher Education
Higher education is available in Cyprus at ‘the Cyprus University' and private institutes.
Private Education
The majority of private schools are registered with the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture and comply with certain curriculum and facility requirements which are mandatory by law.
Teaching at most Cyprus International schools is in English.
In order to assess a child's entry level most schools will require the child to attend an interview and/or take an entrance test.
