Description:
Pyrgos village is situated approximately 15 kilometres north-east of Limassol in Cyprus and its boundaries reach up to the sea. It is built at an average altitude of 85 metres above sea level. Pyrgos sits in a valley crossed by small torrents of water.
Pyrgos is ideally located within easy reach of the Limassol - Nicosia highway and because of the short distance to Limassol, the population has increased considerably.
The village centre is picturesque with many traditional stone built houses, coffee shops, a church and school. Other ameneties such as supermarkets, bank and pharmacy are also available in the village.
Locust and olive trees, citrus fruits, vegetables and forage plants are grown in the area. Pyrgos has been involved in the South Duct irrigation project and benefited considerably from it.
The administrative area of Pyrgos extends as far as the sea and includes the power station and cement works at Moni. Also the marina at Agios Raphael which is very well organised and caters for motor and sailing yachts.
The main church of Pyrgos is Panagia Pyrgotissa (Blessed Virgin Mary of Pyrgos) which started to be built around 1886. It was finally completed in 1902. This beautifully restored church is made of stone and decorated with angels.
History:
The village gets its name from a Medieval tower that existed in the region. Old maps display Pirgo and Birgo. There are two archaeological sites from Prehistoric times in the region proving an much older inhabitation in Pyrgos.
Climate:
Pyrgos receives an average rainfall of about 430 mm every year.
To Visit:
Medieval water mill - due to its architectural and historical importance the mill has been declared an 'Ancient Monument' since 1984 by the Antiquities Department. The water-driven mill is a very well made irrigation system dating as far back as the 13th Century.
Events:
August 15th - Virgin Mary of Pyrgos celebrations. A fair takes place in Pyrgos with stalls, food, traditional singing and dancing.
