Description:
Pissouri is located just off the Paphos - Limassol highway in Cyprus about 30 minutes drive from each. It is divided into two areas - the village on the hill and the beach 5 kilometres below.
It is still very much a farming village - famous for growing grapes, mainly in the valley between the main roads and the sea that leads to Pissouri beach.
There is debate as to where the village got its name. Pissouri is said to come possibly from the ancient city of 'Voousoura' or it may have come from the word Pissouri meaning very dark in relation to the pitched dark nights. However, a more viable source is that it comes from the extensive extraction of skin-sap from pine trees ('pissa' in Greek) which began in the Byzantine Empire.
Pissouri village has managed to retain its traditional Cypriot character whilst adapting to accommodate the visiting tourists. It has numerous tavernas, restaurants and bars with several shops to cater for most needs. The village square also has two banks.
There has been a limited amount of property development around the village allowing expatriots to settle and make Pissouri their home.
Grapes, potatoes and citrus fruits are cultivated in the area and sold locally. There is also an abundance of carob, almond and olive trees in Pissouri.
Pissouri beach was once a small fishing jetty with one taverna until the 1980s. Today, there are a collection of tavernas, a few shops, banks, apartments and a hotel.
The beach is a combination of sand and shingle, clean and safe. Water sports are available during summer.
