Guide 2 Aglantzia - Cyprus

Description:

Aglantzia is a municipality of Nicosia close to the buffer zone separating Southern Cyprus and Occupied Northern Cyprus. It is 31 square kilometres in size and is Nicosia's highest suburb which proved to be an important defensive advantage in past times.
 
It features many green areas including the Athalassa Park, Pedagogical Academy Park and Aglantzia Municipal Park. 
 
It also has churches, schools, clubs, a swimming pool, an athletics centre and library amongst other facilities typically found in a town.
  
Historically, Aglantzia was built in medieval times between 2 hills, one now on the Occupied Northern side of Cyprus called Arona hill, the other is called Mount Lion which holds the castle ruins of La Cava. Tombs dating back to the Bronze Age have been found on the hill. The church of Ayiou Georgiou can be found in the heart of the municipality.
 
To Visit:
Skali Cultural Centre - contains an open air amphitheatre, exhibition hall, restaurant and bar, 2 churches and an old cemetry.
 
La Cava Castle ruins - situated on Mount Lion, La Cava Castle is one of the four ancient monuments of the Nicosia district.
