Dhekelia - Cyprus

Description:

Dekeleia or Dhekelia is one of two Sovereign Based Areas in Cyprus located near to Larnaca and, together with Ayios Nikolaos, forms the Eastern Sovereign Base Area or ESBA. The town of Larnaca lies 15 km west from Dhekelia and Ayia Napa lies 20 km east.
 

It is a UK administered area and was retained by the UK following the granting of independence from Britain in 1960. This was because of the strategic location of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea.
 
Whilst being British military run, there are several events, clubs, organisations and functions where anyone can join.
 
On the Dhekelia beach, there is a snack bar, shop and fish restaurant serving excellent fish and chips in the area.
