Description:

Akamas is a region in Paphos situated at the most northwestly tip of Cyprus. It is a densely wooded peninsula of unspoilt beauty. It is also one of the few nesting areas for sea turtles in the Mediterranean.

Polis is situated to the northeast of the Peninsula and Peyia is on the southern end of the Peninsula.

The peninsula is named after the son of Theseus, hero of the Trojan Wars and founder of the city-kingdom of Soli.

Up until the year 2000, the area was used by the British Military for training exercises.

The area faces the possibility of being excavated as it is the last remaining unspoilt coastline in Cyprus. Because of this, many conservationist organisations are trying to intervene and make Akamas a protected area from property development.

Conservationists and the Cyprus Green Party want to prevent tourist development taking place along the coastline as has happened with many areas in Cyprus where hotels, restaurants, bars and residential villas now line the coast.

Akamas is home to a large variety of flora and fauna with around 530 plant species.

To Visit:

Akamas Gorge - although a bit of rock climbing is required, the Akamas gorge is a place of exquisite beauty.
