Lakatamia is in the Nicosia district of Cyprus located southwest of the capital at an altitude of 280 metres and is split into upper and lower Lakatamia.
The old houses were built around the churches of Ayia Paraskevi, Ayios Nicolaos and Panayia Chrysokoulouriotissa.
The name Lakatamia is thought to come from 'alakatia' meaning water wheels which were used to obtain the underground water from the springs.
Lakatamia became a municipality of Nicosia in 1986 and was further divided into four parishes for administrative purposes.
With property development on the increase, the area has grown into a distinct suburb. The Lakatamia airfield used for the Greek Cypriot National Guard can be found here.
Today, Lakatamia has its own amphitheatre, gallery, stadium including tracks and football field and swimming pools including Olympic size. There is also a scenic 3.5 kilometre path which travels at the side of the Pedieos River which has a path each for cyclists, pedestrians and another for dog walkers.
To Visit:
The Lakatamia Municipal Amphitheatre - Inaugurated in 1994, the amphitheatre is used for performances particularly during the summer.
For keen cyclists, the Strovolos 8 kilometre cycling route which starts along the river banks of the Pedieos River at Lakatamia and ends at the Presidential Palace.
