Description:
Athienou is located in the Larnaca district of Cyprus and is one of only three villages located within the United Nations Buffer Zone. This is the area that separates Cyprus from the Occupied area of Northern Cyprus.
Many believe that the name of the village is derived from the ancient Greek word 'Atta' meaning large rock which characterised the rocky land of the village. It could also come from the Athenians that came to the village from Athens.
Completed in 2006, the Athienou Museum serves as a town hall, municipal building, a Byzantine icon museum and an archaeological museum that houses the finds of the Athienou Archaeological Project.
