Description:
The coastal village of Zygi lies on the south coast of Cyprus, about 40 kilometres southeast of the city of Larnaca. It is in-between the three big cities of Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca. It is built on the beach and has an altitude of 8 metres.
The average annual rainfall is about 380mm allowing vegetables, lemon trees and cereals to be cultivated in the area.
Zygi in its present form was created in the initial years of British domination when locust bean storehouses were built and the exportation of locust beans began from Zygi. The locust bean storehouses still exist in central and coastal Zygi.
The name of the village comes from the weighing (zygizo) of the locust beans before they were exported. The Co-operative Association of Locust bean Disposal of Larnaca still operates in Zygi, collecting the beans.
Today, Zygi is a developing tourist village with several property developments to cater for a growing population. The clean smell of the sea and the beautiful landscape surrounding Zygi make it a prime location away from the stresses of urban life.
It is a well renowned fishermen's village with many seafood restaurants in the area offering a large variety of fresh seafood.
