Description:
Choirokoitia (Choirokitia) is an archeological site which has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1998. It is situated in the Larnaca district, north of Larnaca town and is best known for its preserved archeological beauty dating back to the Neolithic age.The settlement was discovered by Dr. Porphyrios Dikaios from the Cyprus Department of Antiquities in 1934 and is noted as being one of the most important archaeological areas in Cyprus.
It lies within the village, 6 kilometres from the Larnaca coast. It has only one entrance, a stairway that leads to the houses protected within its walls.
Many items including skeletons and broken stone items were discovered buried together in dwellings at the site. There are steep steps that can be climbed to see the full extent of the excavations. However, the higher ground of the site is not suitable for pushchairs and disabled access.
The village of Choirokoitia located closeby is an up and coming area for property development and toursim. It has a church, supermarkets, and tavernas serving traditional Cypriot cuisine.
