Description:
Limassol (Lemesos), situated on the south coast of Cyprus, is the main industrial and maritime area. It is ideally located centrally between the two international airports of Paphos and Larnaca.
It is also a popular tourist destination, particularly during the summer months. In recent years, because of its variety of industry, there has seen an increase in property investment by way of house sales and new property developments.
Because Limassol is at the centre of wine making in Cyprus, the annual wine festival in September is one of the highlights of the year. The various local wineries offer free samples of their products for ten whole days! The Limassol Carnival in February isa also a fantastic occassion lasting for ten days with masquerade parties, balls and grand parades.
Limassol has an extensive range of shops, restaurants, tavernas, bars and nightclubs to suit most people. Busy St.Andrews Street near to the seafront has quaint buildings and small shops situated on the narrow, jostling streets. For the bigger, elegant boutiques and high street shops, a trip to Makarios Avenue is worth a trip.
At the end of the promenade of palms and tall buildings is the old port. Limassol's historic square and ancient region of the city is reached by turning right at the roundabout.
From the Square, the rising walls of the Castle can be seen and beautiful gardens and antiquities surround it on all sides. Some of the best restaurants in Cyprus can be found here - the old carob warehouses have been renovated and turned into splendid restaurants. Booking in advance is advisable as these restaurants are very popular with both locals and tourists.
The Municipal Art Gallery and Folk Art Museum have many interesting exhibits showing the customs, traditions and history of Cyprus.
