Description:
According to a police study, crime figures are on the increase as the credit crunch is felt within Cyprus.
Armed robberies have shot up over 89% compared to the same period last year. Residential and commercial break-ins also appear to have increased.
Those more at risk have been the 24 hour establishments such as kiosks and bakeries. Village banks have also been subjected to armed robberies possibly because of their relaxed security.
Due to the economic downturn, jobs have been cut which may have led to more people turning to petty crime to make ends meet.
Cyprus has always been an area of low crime in the past where security was not really an issue. However, it may be wise for a little extra vigilance from the general public to deter those seeking an easy opportunity to commit a crime in Cyprus.
