Cost Reduction Expected for Mobile Phone Texts and Internet Browsing Abroad

23 April 2009

Description:

MPs in Europe have voted to cut charges for text messages and internet browsing on mobiles abroad.

From July, there will be a price cap of €0.11 cents in place for texting whilst abroad and outgoing voice calls will be capped to €0.43 cents.

The current average charges are €0.29 cents for 'roaming' texts and €0.46 cents per minute for outgoing voice calls.

Many tourists bring their mobile phones to Cyprus and often use their own Sim cards, although local Sim packs are offered by the telecom companies in Cyprus and are relatively cheap to purchase.

CYTA dominates the Cyprus telecoms market share at present but other providers are available.

The new rates which exclude VAT will be applicable from July this year and can be enjoyed by countries within the European Union.

Prices should reduce further in 2010 according to plans set out by the EU.
