Description:
World Migratory Bird Day was celebrated last weekend to remind countries worldwide of their obligation to protect the travelling birds.
Most of the migratory birds have already passed through Cyprus to their central and northern Europe breeding grounds.
A number of different species have been observed in Cyprus taking advantage of the unusually wet climate in April. Examples of these include members of the heron family, the Wood Sandpiper, Ruff, European Bee-eaters, the turquoise European Roller and the bright yellow Golden Oriole.
The endemic black and white Cyprus Wheatear returned to its breeding ground in Cyprus after spending the winter in Sudan and Ethiopia.
BirdLife Cyprus hopes that attempts are made to halt the illegal trapping of small birds which are then sold on to food establishments as delicacies.
