Description:
Over this weekend, Cyprus celebrates the traditional Kataklysmos Flood Festival.
Kataklysmos literally means inundation (flooding of water), the combination of the Pentecost feast of the Holy Spirit and the celebration of Cyprus' nature.
It is customary in Cyprus on this day, which always falls on a Monday, to sprinkle each other with water. This is normally done with water guns or bottles of water.
A lot of local residents will head to the coast and participate in water sports and competitions. The major towns will be holding fairs and festivals. Larnaca traditionally holds the biggest festival.
It seems apt that on this celebration day that involves water; Cyprus could be celebrating the birth of the island when it mythically emerged from the sea!
