Description:
As Cyprus prepares itself for the July and August heat, we can reflect on the old fashioned siesta.
A siesta is a short nap taken usually in the early afternoon after lunch. Although the siesta is traditionally linked with Spain the influence has spread to Latin American countries like Brazil and also Greece and Cyprus who enjoy a short nap during the summer months.
Shop opening times in Cyprus over summer are normally 9am - 1pm, reopening at 3pm until 6pm. Many shop owners and workers go home during 1pm until 3pm to have lunch but the busy demands of home and work means that they often don't use this time to reenergise their batteries.
1pm until 3pm is particularly when energy levels dip naturally, so it is good to use this time to refresh these levels. Studies carried out at various establishments have found that younger people who take a quick 20 minute nap in the afternoon have less risk of a heart attack.
However, it may not be good news for everyone as people over 69 years of age, particularly women, may suffer heart or non-cardiovascular problems through sleeping in the afternoon.
Research has shown that 20 minutes is the ultimate time required to improve your memory and re-charge your batteries. A longer siesta can leave you feeling groggy and may interrupt your nightly sleep.
The increased heat in Mediterranean countries give an almost draining of energy feeling around 2pm which is apparently due to our hormone levels and body temperature decreasing making us feel sleepy.
We at Guide2Cyprus agree with a 2 hour close down during the early afternoon for a siesta but like so many people, fail to put it into practice due to busy demands.
