Feature - The Oleastro Olive Park in Limassol, Cyprus

05 October 2010

Description:

Are you looking for an interesting day out?

When first hearing 'Olive Park' it may come across as quite boring, after all olive trees can be seen all over Cyprus. You may be surprised with all there is to do at the Oleastro Olive Park!

The Oleastro Olive Park lies about half way between Paphos and Limassol near to the picturesque village of Anogyra.

The word 'Oleastro' is derived from the Ancient Greek word for 'wild olive tree' that can still be found here in many areas of Cyprus.

The Olive Oil Museum shows olive oil extraction methods from the past involving old traditions such as feet pressing the olives (as done with grapes) progressing to state of the art ecological pressing methods. Wall displays give interesting facts on the role of the olive in Cyprus through the years.

At the Ecological Olive Mill, the whole state of the art olive oil extraction process can be seen which lasts about 1 ½ hours during mid October until February. The process involves de-leafing, washing, weighing, crushing with millstones. It then goes through the making of the oil with such precision as to get the most out of the olive in terms of quality and recycling of any waste.

There is a also a film on the story of olive oil which can be seen at the visitors centre within the Park. Refreshments are available at the organic café/restaurant which serves traditional home made Cypriot meals.

For the kids, there is a playground, artists' corner or they can take a ride on one of the ponies at the Park.

Souvenirs can be purchased at the gift shop, including the olive oil produced at the Olive Park. There are also cosmetics, body and hair products on sale that have been derived from olive oil.

Opening Times:

7 days a week - 10:00 - 19:00 (closed Christmas Day, New Years Day and Orthodox Easter Sunday)
