Description:
This Thursday will see a bill put to the House Plenum calling for a total smoking ban in all public areas of Cyprus. This will include bars, restaurants, night clubs, hotels, cinemas, sports centres and cars with passengers under the age of16.
Anti Smoking organisations have carried out protests putting pressure on the Cyprus Government to enforce a total smoking ban in public places.
Currently there are designated smoking areas in bars, restaurants and hotels where adequate ventilation is provided. However, the law can be unclear and misleading and non compliance can mean penalties of up to €1,700 and/or a six month jail sentence.
The law for the containment of public smoking was passed by the House of Representative in Cyprus in June 2002.
Anti smoking organisations have campaigned since 2002 for the law to be enforced properly but so far have not been successful.
