Description:
The EU have banned the 100 watt incandescent light bulb from being produced and imported to Cyprus and other EU countries in an attempt to cut greenhouse gases and save energy. The 75 watt incandescent light bulb will be phased out in September 2010 and the 60 watt bulb in September 2011.
The incandescent light bulbs, which have been in use since the 19th century, will be phased out and replaced with the long lasting smaller fluorescent bulbs.
Whilst the fluorescent bulbs are more expensive to buy, they use up to 80% less electricity than the traditional incandescent bulb and last a lot longer.
However, the fluorescent bulbs can trigger health problems such as migraines and other light sensitive medical conditions according to some sufferers.
Although the ban is now in effect, existing supplies of the 100 watt bulb can still be purchased until stocks are exhausted.
