UNESCO to Include Lefkara Lace in its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage

10 September 2009

Description:

The traditional hand-made lace produced in the village of Lefkara in the Larnaca district of Cyprus has been included in UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH).

The relevant committee has decided to include Cyprus lace known as lefkaritiko produced in Lefkara in its list of the world's ICH, a more recent addition to UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites.

The UNESCO General Assembly will officially announce the decision next month.

Lefkara is well known throughout Cyprus for its lace making, embroidery and silverware which dates back centuries.
