Description:
The current time restrictions for British expats eligible for NHS care in the UK looks to be lengthened.
British expats who visit other European countries are allowed NHS care as long as they do not spend more than three months away from the UK.
There are proposals to extend this for up to six months which would be good news for British expats who spend longer periods overseas but where their main residence is still the UK. Many expats in Cyprus divide their time between living in the UK and Cyprus.
In 2004 access to the NHS was restricted by the Health Secretary to make the NHS 'a British service for people who live in Britain.'
The current system allows free NHS treatment for 'ordinary residents' in the UK. Anyone leaving the UK for over three months is not automatically entitled to free NHS treatment.
However emergency treatment for accidents and sudden illness such as heart attacks will still be available free of charge.
Treatment is also free for UK state pensioners living abroad who are visiting the UK except for pre-planned treatment.
