Description:
Freak weather conditions across the island of Cyprus this weekend saw a violent storm in the capital Nicosia on Friday described as a freak 'tornado' in which 17 people were injured.
Trees were uprooted, roofs blown off, cars wrecked and telegraph poles ripped from their foundations causing havoc and destruction across the city.
The stormy conditions continued on Saturday with the mountain areas of Kampos and Pyrgos affected by powerful hailstorms causing several accidents. A number of roads in the Larnaca and Nicosia mountain areas suffered landslides leading to temporary closure with police advising of the dangerous driving conditions.
Storms also knocked out the electricity supply in the Lakatamia area.
More thunder and hailstorms were seen on Sunday with the Cyprus weather services saying the bad weather conditions will continue until mid-week.
It will take time to assess all the damage caused and for compensation claims to be processed.
Interior Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis said "The official count of damages will start on Monday, so we can move ahead with our plan to support all those affected".
Weather conditions like this are not unknown in Cyprus but usually occur along the east coast rather than inland.
