Description:
According to the UK's independent elections watchdog, the Electoral Commission, it is estimated that only around 13,000 expats out of 5.5 million British citizens living abroad are actually on the electoral role in the UK.
There are approximately 59,000 expats in Cyprus who are eligible to vote in UK Parliamentary and European Parliamentary elections. British citizens living abroad can become an overseas voter if they have registered to vote in the UK within the last 15 years.
A UK general election may be held at any time between now and June 2010. In order to become an overseas voter, visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/overseas and download, complete and return the registration form.
Once registered, expats can vote by post or by proxy. Logistically voting by post may pose problems as the ballot paper needs to be received and returned within four days. Voting by proxy involves assigning someone to vote on your behalf. If they live in a different area to where you were last registered in the UK, they will be able to vote by post.
There may be the possibility of e-voting (voting online) in the future; however due to security risks on pilot schemes this is not yet possible.
Another option may be to use British Embassies in countries throughout the world but local authorities in the UK coordinate the voting and there is nothing in the pipeline to coordinate voting abroad.
