Description:
Royal Mail workers in the UK have been voting to decide whether to take nationwide industrial action as a dispute over pay and modernisation plans has yet to be resolved.
This could have a knock on effect here in Cyprus for many expats who buy online from UK sites could see their plans disrupted with Christmas just around the corner they .
It has already been noticeable that delivery times for cards and letters to and from the UK have suffered due to the backlog of post.
The voting closed yesterday and the results are expected very soon. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has indicated that a yes vote is expected.
Talks with Royal Mail management are continuing but the union has conceded that any strike in November would affect the Christmas post.
In light of the recent one day strikes across the UK there is already a sizable backlog of undelivered mail which has lead to small businesses and internet retailers losing faith with the service.
Amazon have already withdrawn a contract to deliver parcels over 500 grams and will use a rival service, Home Delivery Network (HDN). Whilst eBay users are claiming the strikes are causing damage to small businesses suffering negative feedback and losing their online reliability ratings.
The last time the CWU members called a national strike was in 2007. Royal Mail managers agreed to a series of pay deals and also offered to talk further about consulting the union on changes in order to solve the dispute.
