Feature - Tombs of the Kings
If you have a couple of hours to spare and are thinking of what to do in Cyprus then a trip to Tombs of the Kings in Paphos is well worth a visit.
Tombs of the Kings is a large burial place spread out along the coast road overlooking the sea. It is located approximately 2 kilometres north-west of Paphos harbour in Cyprus.
The site is big and there are some spectacular views to be seen around the area so it is worth taking a camera to get some good photo shots.
Some of the underground tombs date back to the 4th Century BC and can be reached from stairs that lead down to the sunken areas carved from solid rock.
The name suggests that Kings were buried here but further studies have found that the burial sites were for Paphian dignitaries and Cyprus aristocrats.
The tombs were built to resemble the life and position of the living person and thus had jewels, money, furniture and other belongings on the walls inside.
Each tomb was built to hold the family and had to be opened and reopened each time a family member died.
To this day archaeological excavations are still being carried out at the site.
