Description:
A proposed bar to be constructed in the garden of the Muslim mosque of Hala Sultan Tekke located near to Larnaca International Airport has caused outrage amongst some local Muslims in Cyprus.
The Cyprus Authorities reportedly wanted the bar built in order to serve visiting tourists to the historical site.
Umm Haram (Hala Sultan) was believed to be the foster mother of the Islamic prophet Mohammad and also wife to one of the highest ranking officers of Moawia. She died during a siege of Larnaca and was buried near to the salt lake where later the mosque and area was named after her.
The shrine was initially built by Sheikh Hassan around 1760. Hala Sultan Tekke is a listed Ancient Monument and consists of a mosque, minaret, mausoleum, living quarters and cemetery.
The complex is open to everyone and does not belong to any religious group, attracting both Muslims and Christians. The building and gardens have been restored back to their original charm.
A leading Muslim was quoted as saying the provocation move is offending to Muslims all over the world not just in Cyprus.
