Cyprus Airways Passenger Chaos at Larnaca Airport

03 November 2009

Description:

On Saturday night a scheduled Cyprus Airways flight to Athens had to be cancelled just prior to take off from Larnaca Airport when a passenger opened the rear exit door.

Just after the captain ordered the crew to lock the aircraft doors the passenger opened the rear exit door which activated the emergency chute then jumped the airport fence and disappeared.

The aircraft was damaged and the flight had to be cancelled causing delays to the 158 passengers on board.

Police issued a warrant for Moreno Davaris, a Portuguese Greek who was later arrested and charged with breaking civil aviation safety regulations and entering a prohibited airport space without permission and causing damage to the aircraft.

It is not known why he departed the aircraft and fled.

The new Larnaka Airport will be opening on 10th November 2009 with Cyprus Airways and Easyjet flights initially departing there. From 17th November 2009 the new airport will be fully operational with all flights using the new facility.
