Extended Opening Hours for Cyprus Shops

The Cyprus labour department has announced that opening hours in shops can be extended to the following times in the run up to Christmas:-
 
Monday to Sunday, from 05:00 until 20:00.
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, from 05:00 until 18:00.
Christmas Day and Boxing Day, all stores are to close.

The new timings commence today, 1st December until 31st December inclusive.
 
There are strict rules regarding workers hours in that daily hours should not exceed 8 hours and the working week should not exceed 38 hours. However, overtime is allowed providing it is not more than an extra 2 hours a day or 8 hours a week. Overtime should be on a voluntary basis and not 'forced' by the Employer.
 
The labour department will be conducting 'spot checks' to ensure that these rules are followed. Heavy fines or imprisonment can be imposed if employers fail to implement the legislation.
