Description:
This week marks the 20th anniversary of the chipping away of the Berlin wall which brought together the divided East and West Germany.
At that time in 1989 there was mixed reaction as to whether it would be a good or bad thing for both sides and for Europe in general but the fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification and the demise of the cold war.
Twenty years on and East and West Germans have integrated into a common society and most are very happy that the wall was torn down.
It is only apt to compare the current talks for peace and reunification between the divided North and South Cyprus.
The wall dividing Nicosia still stands 35 years after the Turkish invasion and leaders from around the world have been in talks to help reach a solution.
A United Nations led initiative to resolve the differences was proposed in January 2002 when direct talks began between the representatives of the two communities under the auspices of Kofi Annan, the then leader of the UN. The Annan Plan was eventually rejected by both sides on 31 March 2004.
President Christofias and the Turkish leader Mehmet Ali Talat resumed direct negotiations in September 2008 with the aim to reunite the island.
The talks are still ongoing but there is optimism that an amicable solution will be found leading to peace within the island.
Let us hope that this can be achieved sooner rather than later.
