It is expected that the contracts between the private bus companies and the Cyprus Transport Ministry will be signed by the end of this year.
 

This will pave the way for the new public transport system to be online from 1st June 2010.

 
The transport minister, Nicos Nicolaides, confirmed that around 60% of bus owners are interested in the new scheme. Although those that oppose to the scheme will be compensated in line with legislation.

 
A questionnaire about public transport was made available to the public earlier this year by the Cyprus Government which has helped in making some of the decisions.

 
Fares should be reduced when the new bus service is introduced with tickets within districts costing less than €1 thus encouraging the use of public transport.
