Description:
The British Deputy Foreign Minister for European Affairs, Chris Bryant arrived in Cyprus yesterday for a two day visit.
During his stay he will "meet leaders, communities and people working to achieve a comprehensive settlement”.
In a press release he states that he is not on any side “other than that of reaching a fair settlement” and that “I don’t underestimate the obstacles or the challenges that the leaders are facing, but with courage and flexibility I hope they can reach an agreement for the benefit of all Cypriots”.
UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown recently offered to make available almost 50% of the bases territory to a unified Cyprus. Mr Bryant said “it will be up to the two leaders to negotiate what happens with this land”.
This morning Mr Bryant will be meeting with President Christofias and Foreign Minister, Markos Kyprianou. Later this afternoon he will be meeting Mehmet Ali Talat in the occupied area.
Mr Bryant has referred to an “historical and golden opportunity” in Cyprus, which should not be missed.
