Description:
Revenue from tourism in Cyprus during October recorded the second largest fall this year with a 21.3% drop against figures recorded for the same period last year.
The figures for January to October 2009 have seen a month on month decrease compared to last year resulting in a 16.7% fall so far this year.
Cyprus relies heavily on tourism from the UK which is still feeling the effects of the global recession and a strong euro currency against sterling has resulted in a decline in tourists from the UK.
Normally more than half of tourists who visit Cyprus come from the UK. However, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) is looking at other ways of promoting tourism around the island. It has recently announced a scheme to encourage local residents by offering cheap weekend package breaks.
The CTO is also promoting Cyprus to countries outside the EU, Russia and Pakistan are amongst these countries who are showing an interest in travelling to Cyprus.
Many businesses have employed fewer staff during the summer season and some have even closed early for the winter break. A few businesses even decided that it wasn't worth opening at all and have remain closed and empty all summer.
