Description:
Heavy rainfall in Cyprus last weekend saw 600,000 cubic meters of water flow into reservoirs around the island.
It also highlighted the inadequacy of the drainage system mainly in the Larnaca and surrounding areas.
The newly opened international airport at Larnaca saw damage to the exterior western wing where water had entered the underground area used for loading and unloading luggage.
As a result electrical installations, including the elevators, were damaged and out of service for a period of time. Debris left over from the construction works was washed down drains on the roof causing a blockage which resulted in a leak in the departure area.
Larnaca town had extensive flooding closing a number of roads, even though the same areas are flooded repeatedly, nothing has yet been done to address drainage problems.
At Konnos Beach near Cape Greko damage was caused when mud, stones and debris were swept down from the Ayios Nikandrou and Ayios Panteleimonas hills washing away the picturesque beach pathway.
