Traffic Fines in Cyprus to be Paid Via The Internet

10 December 2009

Description:

A new system for payment of traffic fines was introduced to Parliament on Monday by the Ministry of Communications and Works.

The system will allow payment to be made via the internet or using a credit card at any of the islands police stations. At present payment can only be made in cash at Police stations.

There is no indication as to when the legislation will become law but when passed it will allow traffic offences not requiring a court appearance to be paid via the internet.

The legislation will also contain a provision which will make it unnecessary to present your driving license when paying fines or to have points added to it. Instead the registration of violations where points need adding will be made by police in a central archive they maintain without the license of the transgressor needing to be present at any stage of the process.

Police will still be able to ask for a driving license to establish identity and for random spot checks.

The proposed system is expected to reduce the number of cases taken to court when the time limit for payment of fines has expired.
