No Water Cuts for Cyprus During The Christmas Period

14 December 2009

Description:

Agricultural Minister Michalis Polynikis has announced that from today until 8th January 2010 there will be no water cuts.

He said that the Ministry of Agriculture will re-evaluate the whole issue of water cuts in the New Year, with a view to ending cuts. Consumers are urged to conserve their water supply.

Polynikis said “It seems that until now things have been going well. However, it is important that our management remains within the forecast framework."

He added that the Government is on course to complete its pre-election pledges to resolve the water crisis, concluding with the construction of its last planned desalination plant.

With the additional desalination plants under construction, the Government now aims to store up enough water to be able to begin providing water to the agricultural producers in 2011. “We do not only want to be able to give farmers enough to survive. We want them to be able to increase their production to a satisfactory level,” he said.

Today is likely to be slightly warmer and dryer than over the weekend, however rain may return tomorrow with thunder and lightning forecast to return on Wednesday.

The colder spell over the weekend saw the first snow falls of the winter in the Troodos Mountain range, prompting suggestions of a white Christmas for the region.
